Crypto Community of Practice of Latin America
The Crypto Community of Practice of Latin America is a regional initiative led by the Basel Institute on Governance through its Lima-based office and International Centre for Asset Recovery.
It brings together investigators, prosecutors and financial intelligence specialists working on crypto-related financial crime to exchange practical experience, strengthen operational approaches and build trusted professional connections across Latin America. The initiative also seeks to strengthen dialogue and practical understanding between public authorities and relevant private-sector actors.
The Community of Practice focuses on real-world challenges linked to investigating, tracing, freezing and recovering cryptoassets in a rapidly evolving financial crime landscape.
Regional context
Cryptoasset adoption is growing rapidly across Latin America, driven by factors including inflation, currency instability and demand for digital financial services. Regulatory frameworks continue to evolve, but law enforcement and investigative approaches are also adapting to increasingly sophisticated criminal activity.
Public authorities and private-sector actors both play important roles in responding effectively to crypto-related financial crime. The Community of Practice supports stronger regional cooperation, practical knowledge-sharing and greater understanding of how public-private collaboration can contribute to more effective responses.
Activities
- Practitioner discussions Grounded in operational experience and real casework.
- Technical workshops On crypto investigations and asset recovery.
- Webinars On emerging trends, standards and challenges.
- Peer exchange To strengthen regional cooperation and information sharing.
- Public–private dialogue To build understanding between authorities and relevant private-sector actors.
The initiative operates primarily in Spanish, with interpretation support in English and Portuguese where needed.
Funding and support
The Community of Practice is supported through Basel Institute resources and limited sponsorship from selected private-sector organisations interested in strengthening public-sector capacity to address crypto-related financial crime in Latin America. Sponsors do not influence participant selection, topics discussed or the operational direction of the initiative.
