Africa Crypto & Asset Recovery Network
The Africa Crypto & Asset Recovery Network is a regional initiative led by the Basel Institute on Governance through its International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR). It provides a practitioner-led community of practice for investigators, prosecutors and financial intelligence specialists working on crypto-related financial crime.
The network supports stronger operational capacity to investigate crypto-related crime and recover illicit assets through practical learning, peer exchange and trusted professional networks.
Why it matters
Cryptoasset adoption is growing across Africa, driven by factors including remittances, inflationary pressures and expanding digital financial services. At the same time, enforcement and regulatory capacity have not always kept pace.
Law enforcement agencies often face challenges tracing, freezing and recovering cryptoassets, while opportunities for sustained regional operational exchange remain limited. The network aims to help address these gaps by strengthening practical knowledge, investigative capacity and cross-border cooperation.
Activities
- Practitioner roundtables Focused on operational challenges and lessons learned.
- Technical training And hands-on knowledge exchange.
- Peer learning To strengthen regional cooperation and asset recovery capacity.
Funding and support
The network is supported through Basel Institute resources and limited sponsorship from selected private-sector organisations interested in strengthening law enforcement capacity in Africa to address crypto-related financial crime. Sponsors do not influence participant selection, topic selection or the operational direction of the network.
